Zevenwaght manor

Zevenwacht wine estate is part of the Stellenbosch wine route, and is situated on the outskirts of the town of Kuilsriver. The name Zevenwacht means seven expectations, and I don’t know what the name giver meant by this , but you can most certainly expect to have a good time.

picnic_eatsThe Zevenwacht restaurant has a variety of picnic baskets that one can choose from, and when I saw that there is even an option of a “braai” picnic basket, I knew that this would work for me. It is always advisable to book a day or two in advance at most of the wine estates, and this most certainly applies to Zevenwacht.

It is short walk from the restaurant to the picnic/braai area next to the dam. Upon entering the “forest” one can sense an overwhelming peacefulness, even the forest is as neat as a pin, and the lawn down at the jetty is perfectly manicured. It seems that even the ducks are afraid to mess on it.

If the thought of sitting on a picnic blanket does not appeal to you, there is even a choice of wooden benches or cast iron garden furniture to be seated at, and the staff from the restaurant go the extra mile to make your visit a very memorable one.

We chose to have the “entry level” braai picnic basket and we could not believe the amount of food that was crammed into the traditional cane picnic basket for two people. One garlic bread, two chops, two pieces of chicken, two pieces of boerewors, two salads each (potato and a green salad), two desserts each (fruit sosatie, koeksister and a small milk tart) and a small cheese platter with crackers and butter. Needless to say this ws way to much for two people. Included in this very reasonable price was all the braai utensils, a huge pile of dried vineyard , a whole box of blitz (I’m not to sure why) and a bag of charcoal.

What more could one ask for? Maybe good weather, but even though the notorious south easter was howling, the wind had very little effect on us here in this very secluded spot.

We cannot wait to do another picnic at Zevenwacht. We will be back before the end of summer.
