The Overberg , a name translated from Afrikaans, means ‘the other side of the mountain’. To early settlers in the Cape it represented the land beyond the mountains of Africa, a region rich in resources as well as boundless treasures.
The Overberg is known as the bread basket of the Cape, and the main farming here is wheat and canola.
The Overberg is bordered by by the Riviersonderend mountains in the north and Hottentots Holland mountains in the west, the Atlantic and Indian oceans in the south and the Breede River to the east.
This area comprises mostly of gently rolling hills, and here you will also find many breeding pairs of South Africas national bird, the Blue Crane.
Major towns include Cape Agulhas, the southern most tip of Africa, Swellendam , Bredasdorp , Caledon and Hermanus, famous for its whale watching.
